The Smarter Travel Areas Competition gives Westport a unique opportunity to become a world class sustainable travel demonstration town showcasing alternative smarter ways to travel such as cycling, walking, car sharing and public transport.

The purpose of this competition is to encourage people to make a lifestyle change, leave their cars at home whenever possible and opt instead to walk, cycle or use other more sustainable forms of transport, particularly over short journeys.

Westport is one of 11 towns nationally to be short-listed to enter the final stage of the Department of Transport’s Smarter Travel Areas Competition. The town is now competing for funding of up to €50 million over 5 years which could potentially transform Westport into world class Smarter Travel Town.
