Westport has been designated as one of three centres in Ireland that have become Ireland's first Smarter Travel Demonstration Areas. It aims to reduce car dependence and promote walking, cycling, car sharing and public transport.
The other areas are Limerick city and Dungarvan.
Westport will receive funding over the next four years to roll out a wide range of measures and inter-ventions targeted at encouraging people to use more sustainable modes of transport and to engage in transport planning. Lots of infrastructure and green-way extensions are being implemented to enhance connectivity between residential areas and the town. It is envisaged that Westport will be a shared space centre where walkers, cyclists and cars can exist together.
